Landscapers set quarterly meeting

The Hawaii Island Landscape Association’s quarterly meeting is Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Imiloa: Hawaii’s Astronomy Center in Hilo. The meeting is open to all interested members of the landscape industry.

Following a short introduction to the center at 10:30 a.m., the group will be admitted to the half-hour planetarium show, followed by a visit to the museum. At 12:30 p.m. is lunch. Attendees may bring a lunch or order one for an additional fee.

Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Randall Monahan, the landscape architect for the garden and grounds, will give a presentation on the facility’s landscaping and lead a tour of the landscape. The plantings at the site are native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plants.

Attendees are requested to make their own arrangements to meet at the center for the tour at 10:30 a.m. The following directions to the center begin at the Hilo Bayfront. Go mauka up Wainuenue Avenue to Komohana Street. Go left on Komohana until the sign for Imiloa: Hawaii’s Astronomy Center on left. Imiloa is located in the new technology park, just before the University of Hawaii Komohana Agricultural Center.

The planetarium and museum admission price is $9. An additional fee of $7 will be charged to those who would like to order lunch from O’Keefe Bakery, through HILA prior to the meeting.

To become a member of HILA, and receive e-mail notification of future meetings, write HILA@aloha.net with “membership information” in the subject. Applications are forwarded to the person’s home if he or she leaves a street address.


Holistic Hawaii Expo scheduled in September

Actress, recording artist and former Miss Hawaii Traci Toguchi will highlight the 10th annual Holistic Hawaii Expo with a keynote presentation: “Self Empowerment — Live Your Potential.” The expo is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 and 24 at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.

The expo offers a weekend of inspiration and transformation with hands-on demonstrations, exhibits, speakers, workshops, presenters and therapies to experience and explore. Holistic professionals and businesses showcase leading-edge technologies, natural therapies, services and products from around the globe. Admission is free to speakers, demonstrations, exhibits and classes; workshops are available for a fee.

A hana hou party, A “Starry, Starry Night,” begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Kalanikai Grill. The musical celebration and whole foods buffet, features songs by Toguchi. Cost is $55 by reservation.
