Teri-beef plate sales to aid Food Basket
Bank of Hawaii will be selling KTA’s teri-beef plates from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at KTA Super Stores in Kona Coast Shopping Center at 74-5594 Palani Road in Kailua-Kona to raise money for The Food Basket—Hawaii Island’s Food Bank. The fundraiser is part of the bank’s annual company-wide charity efforts to raise money for local nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves.
The cost is $7 per plate, which includes rice and corn.

Applications for Richards awards sought
The Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation is welcoming applications for the second annual Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Hawaii Island Community Award for $10,000. The award was established last year in honor of Herbert “Monty” Montague Richards Jr., a Hawaii Island community leader and former longtime board director for Bank of Hawaii.
The Ka’u Hospital Foundation and North Kohala Community Resource Center were the recipients of the inaugural award last year.
The award supports Hawaii Island nonprofit organizations that demonstrate innovative approaches to help improve the quality of life on Hawaii Island. Award selection will be based on: 1) An organization that has been in existence for a minimum of three years and has demonstrated innovative approaches to fulfilling its mission; 2) An organization with exemplary leadership demonstrated by its executive team, staff and board of directors; 3) An organization that sets measurable benchmarks to monitor progress and ensure success.
Any nonprofit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization in Hawaii County may be nominated by the public or may nominate itself for the 2009 award.
Award brochures and application forms are available at all Hawaii Island District branches for customers and the public. Nomination materials should be submitted to: Hawaii Island Manager, Attn: Monty Richards Award, P.O. Box 305, Hilo, HI 96721. The deadline to submit the forms is July 31. The award will be presented in September in honor of Richards’ birthday.

Solar electricity is topic for seminar
Solar electricity is being adopted by more and more Big Island homeowners and businesses. The public can learn about new technologies and incentives for solar electricity at a free seminar on solar electric applications in Hawaii from 6 to 8 p.m. June 24 at Tutu’s House in Waimea.

Seminar on home buying planned
Bank of Hawaii is hosting part 6 of its “Smart Money” series of financial education seminars called “Pathways to Homeownership for First Time Homebuyers.” The seminar will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 30 at the Kona branch at 75-5595 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona. At the seminar designed for first-time homebuyers, attendees will learn about the entire mortgage process from prequalification to closing costs.
The seminar is free to the public and is led by financial experts from the bank. No products or services will be sold at the seminar, and no promotional materials will be distributed.

Leong promoted by Bank of Hawaii
Alison Jones Leong has been promoted to vice president of Bank of Hawaii’s Private Client Services on Hawaii Island. She was previously assistant vice president.
As a relationship manager and wealth adviser, she is responsible for servicing high net worth individuals and their families with comprehensive wealth management strategies, including the oversight of investment and fiduciary portfolios.
Prior to joining Bank of Hawaii’s Kailua-Kona office in 2001, Leong had a management career in leadership development with the Ken Blanchard Cos. in San Diego.
Kona Brewing opens New Hampshire brewery
More than 5,000 miles from its Kailua-Kona headquarters, Kona Brewing Co. held a traditional Hawaiian blessing at Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 28. Kona Brewing Co. recently began brewing its beer at the Portsmouth brewery to fulfill East Coast demand for its fresh craft beer in an environmentally responsible manner.
