Seminar on women’s self defense slated
A women’s self defense seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 and 27 at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building. Participants will learn self-preservation tips and tactics from the SAFE, or Striking Accurately with Focus and Explosion, method in a detailed extensive course. Students must be at least 12 years of age to participate.
The course will teach the following:
c Defense against the most common strikes and grabs
c Streetwise strategies on how to avoid violent confrontations
c Nine natural body weapons to disable an attacker when there are no other escape options and a person fears for his life.
The fee of $55 includes a women’s SAFE method T-shirt.

Kealakekua center offers family event
Families are invited to the “Back to School Boogie” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 29 at Kealekekua Ranch Center. The event is free and everyone is welcome.
Keiki can bounce on inflatable bouncers or climb a rock wall. There also will be airbrush tattoos, balloons and free pony rides. Those attending can donate a can of food and receive a keiki wristband to play games with prizes. All canned foods will be donated to the St. Benedict’s Pantry in South Kona.
Live entertainment will include Dance Hawaii Dance Club, West Hawaii Dance Academy and the Aloha Performing Arts Company.
Lawn chairs are welcome.

Training for health care providers planned
Kona Community Hospital will be offering a “Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers” four-hour class from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the following Fridays: Aug. 28 and Sept. 18 and 30. Classes will be located in the hospital’s conference room.
“Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers” is geared toward recertification of clinical doctors, nurses and health care professionals. It covers cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for infants, children and adults, automated external defibrillator training and choking techniques. Participants receive CPR certificates upon completion.
