Island Air adds new flight on Sept. 15

Island Air will expand its network of non-stop interisland routes with a new flight connecting Kauai and Hawaii Island on Sept. 15. The new daily roundtrip flight linking Lihue and Kona will allow customers to avoid an unnecessary stop in Honolulu or Maui. This is the first time in more than 10 years that any airline has offered a direct flight between these two destinations.

Reservations are now being accepted. To receive the lowest fare, travelers should book on Island Air’s Web site at islandair.com.

Island Air now offers 17 individual routes between the islands, more than three times as many as any other scheduled carrier.

Various collectibles and antiques will be on sale, including furniture, Hawaiiana, bottles, jewelry, crystal, china, silver, clothing, art and ceramics.

The $1 admission free will benefit the Waimea Family YMCA. There will also be food by Maha’s Kitchen.

Pai appointed cultural resources specialist

Greg Chun, president and general manager of Keauhou Resort, recently announced the appointment of Mahealani Pai to the newly-created position of cultural resources specialist.

Pai’s responsibilities will center around developing cultural educational opportunities and identifying sacred sites for restoration within the resort. Pai brings a wealth of knowledge including cultural research, restoration, cultural protocol and the ancient art of hula and hoopa.

The graduate of Wallace R. Farrington High School on Oahu holds an associate degree in Hawaiian studies and applied science from Hawaii Community College.

Murphy is new chef at Merriman’s restaurant

Peter Merriman, co-founder of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, recently hired a new chef de cuisine for his Waimea flagship restaurant.

Chef Neil Murphy now leads the culinary line-up after gaining more than two decades of experience in New York City’s most revered kitchens. During his time at the River Cafe, Aureole, La Cote Basque, Symphony Cafe and Park Avenue Cafe, Murphy earned critical acclaim from the New York Times, (Murphy’s cooking is “fresh and flavorful,” “impressive,” and “lovely”) and has been featured on “At the Chef’s Table,” a nationally syndicated show produced by public television.

Murphy’s personal passion is the handling and preparation of fresh, local produce — a passion shared with Merriman, who founded his Waimea restaurant nearly 18 years ago on the principle that the most authentic dining experience showcases the finest local produce, meats and products and, in turn, supports the island economy. This locally grown, locally prepared approach is now widely known as “Hawaii Regional Cuisine.”
