Coffee farmers group holding workshop

Kona Coffee Farmers Association is holding a workshop on coffee drying and storage from 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources offices (opposite Aloha Theater in Kainaliu).

The workshop will be presented by Ken Sheppard, with assistance from Kona farmers and a comprehensive handout is included.

The “Understanding Coffee Drying and Coffee Storage — Theory and Practical Solutions to Maintain/Improve Coffee Quality” workshop will include: an in-depth look at the principles and theory of drying; a look at mechanical drying to better understand sun drying; pros and cons of mechanical vs. sun drying; practical low-cost solutions for drying; the dehumidifier dryer: a case study; sun deck design for efficient drying; coffee storage criteria; modified atmosphere in storage rooms — design guidelines; and introduction to an innovative new low-cost storage method.

Registration and coffee begin at 8 a.m. The workshop is free to association members and $10 for nonmembers. The $10 fee may be applied to the $25 association membership.

Landscapers’ group seeks award candidates

The Hawaii Island Landscape Association awards program is looking for worthy candidates.

The awards will honor excellence in landscape design, installation and maintenance, as well as environmental stewardship. For the first time in 2007, the association will be presenting a top honors award, called the Kulia I Ka Nuu award. Kulia I Ka Nuu means strive for the highest. A Hawaiian wood bowl will be awarded to the winner of this prestigious recognition.

Any individuals or firms that have created outstanding landscape environments will be considered. The association is especially seeking properties that reflect an awareness of the value of a well-planned, professionally installed and well-maintained landscape.

Eleven award categories are available. Installation includes two sub-categories based on price: $5,000 to $50,000 and $50,000 and up:

c residential design

c commercial design

c residential installation, $5,000 to $50,000 and $50,000 and up

c commercial installation $5,000 to $50,000 and $50,000 and up

c residential maintenance

c commercial maintenance

c water feature design and installation

c environmental stewardship

c Kulia I Ka Nuu award

Entries will be judged by a committee of association members who will visit the site.

Entrants must be present and notify residents when the judging will take place. Winners will be notified and invited to the organization’s awards banquet.


Golf clubmaker relocates to Big Island

Mike Moynahan, golf clubmaker and owner of Kamaaina Clubmakers, previously located for more than 10 years in Upcountry Maui, has moved and opened a new shop in Waimea. Moynahan is available by appointment at 870-4473 and is located at 64-880 Kahilu Road, just off Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.
