Kim joining lawyer in China for program
Robert D.S. Kim, attorney at law in Kealakekua, has been invited by Kathleen Flynn Peterson, president-elect of the American Association for Justice (formerly known as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America), to participate in the international professional and cultural program Oct. 7 to 19 in Beijing/Shanghai, China.
A delegation of American attorneys specializing in trial law will meet with Chinese officials and attorneys to engage in the exchange of ideas and discussions as China emerges toward a free market economy.
Child care classes beginning soon
People Attentative to Children offers free classes for anyone interested in providing child care in their home. Participants learn about the role of the provider as an important factor in the early education field, family life, workforce and community.
Classes are being held at present at the Kona office and the “Introduction to Family Child Care” will be held Oct. 2 in Waimea. The basic series consists of classes with topics covering bookkeeping, child development and guidance, setting up an environment and how children learn best through play.
There is no fee, however, registration is required in advance. Space is limited, call 325-3800.
Fruit growers meet Monday in Kainaliu
Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers-West Hawaii meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service office in Kainaliu. Ken Love will talk about his recent trip to the Wolfskill Experimental Orchard near Davis, Calif., and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Davis Germplasm Repository, that has 300 types of figs and 200 types of pomegranates in its collection.
Members are asked to bring fruit for sampling.
The next 12 Trees Project workday is scheduled for Sunday at the project site toward the bottom of Napoopoo Road next to the Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative. Volunteers are asked to arrive about 8:30 a.m. with shovels and rakes to assist in applying mulch and macadamia nut shells at the site. Refreshments will be provided.

Mediation center honors volunteer
The West Hawaii Mediation Center recently recognized its volunteer of the year, Steve Mann, at this year’s annual meeting. The center is a nonprofit community mediation center that relies on trained volunteers to provide mediation to the West Hawaii community.
Mann has served as a volunteer mediator since 2004, and is trained in basic and domestic mediation.
The center provides mediation, facilitation, conflict resolution education and training programs. For more information about the center, to volunteer, or to make a donation, call 885-5525.
Property managers meeting Sept. 20
The Big Island Chapter of the National Association of Residential Property Managers will hold its membership/luncheon meeting from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Fujimama’s Restaurant in Kailua-Kona. The meeting is open to members, affiliates and their guests.
Guest speakers will be from Aloha Home Services, which provides local handyman and home inspection services. They will make a presentation and host question-and-answer sessions.
