Farmers’ produce sought by food bank

The Food Basket Inc. (aka Hawaii Island Food Bank) has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to purchase grade A produce at grade A prices for locally grown fruits and vegetables. The fresh produce will be distributed to low income seniors on the island of Hawaii starting in September.

Any farmer who can provide grade A fruits or vegetables during any of the months of September through November should call Joanne Nagasako, 933-6020, at the Hawaii Island Food Bank as soon as possible.

Payment for the grade A produce will be made promptly to participating vendors.


L&L restaurant opens in Keauhou area

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue has opened at Keauhou Shopping Center. The restaurant is a fusion of Asian, Hawaiian and American food set in a Hawaii-themed, quick-service, casual restaurant.

The restaurant features a variety of casual Hawaiian cuisine, including Hawaiian barbecued beef, chicken katsu (fried, breaded pieces of chicken), the Asian-influenced musubi (an oversized sushi consisting of a block of rice topped with a choice of meat and wrapped in dried seaweed) and the island favorite, the loco moco (savory homemade hamburger patties over rice covered with brown gravy and topped with eggs served Hawaiian style).


Hull honored at ACF convention

The American Academy of Chefs, the honor society of the American Culinary Federation, inducted Jean Hull, certified culinary educator, of Kailua-Kona, during a formal ceremony at the 2007 ACF National Convention July 20 in Orlando, Fla.

Hull is a member of American Culinary Federation Kona-Kohala Chefs de Cuisine Inc. and presents nutrition-awareness classes to thousands of children in West Hawaii each year. In 2006, she was appointed to the national Chef and Child Foundation Board.

The American Academy of Chefs recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions to the culinary profession. With more than 19,000 American Culinary Federation members, spanning 230 chapters nationwide, approximately 800 belong to the American Academy of Chefs.


Typically Tropical among fastest growing companies

Rainbow Real Estate Group dba Typically Tropical Properties has been ranked by the Pacific Business News as the 25th fastest growing small company in the state in 2006. The privately held company has also made the list in 2005 when it was ranked No. 8.

John S. Rabi, chief executive officer, accepted the Hooulu Award from Pacific Business News at a recent luncheon.

Fish Hopper announces new management team

The Fish Hopper of Kailua-Kona is under new management for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fish Hopper is a family restaurant based out of Monterey, Calif.

Joel Genavia and Dana Lewis, both from Monterey, along with Bonnie Schenk, of Kona, are working together to oversee the day-to-day restaurant operations and handling guest relations.

Pedro Almazan is the kitchen manager from the Fish Hopper’s sister restaurant in Monterey on Cannery Row.

Christina Garcia, of Kona, is the new marketing manager, working closely with the community to promote business and guest relations.
