Lanihau plans 20th anniversary event
Lanihau Shopping Center will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Aug. 2. Located at the heart of Kailua-Kona, Lanihau offers shopping, dining and services through its 24 stores and is anchored by Bank of Hawaii, Longs Drugs and Sack ‘n’ Save.
To celebrate this milestone anniversary, community festivities — including activities for keiki, cutting of an anniversary cake, watermelon and ice cream eating contest, mini fashion show and entertainment — will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2, opening with a performance by the Kealakehe Polynesian Club. KWXX radio personality Gavin Cruz will be broadcasting live from Lanihau that day, and there will be drawings for prizes that were donated by various businesses on the island, culminating with a grand prize giveaway of $1,000 worth of top tier Aloha Petroleum Gasoline (must be present to win).
Entertainment headliner for the celebration is the 2007 Battle of the Bands winner, Pacific Roots. This seven-member group — which has opened for bands and artists such as Sean Naauao, Fiji, the Mana o Company and Natural Vibes — plays traditional Hawaiian, island reggae, roots reggae and originals. They have also been featured on a special edition of “K5 Hot Hawaiian Nights.”
The public is invited to join the celebration; entries for the drawings will be accepted at Lanihau Shopping Center stores now through 2 p.m. on Aug. 2.

Young Brothers welcomes new barge
Young Brothers Ltd. welcomes the second of four new freight barges that will provide replacement capacity to Hawaii’s critical interisland cargo market.
On July 20, the Makaala, which cost nearly $12 million and has a cargo capacity of 8,600 tons, began transporting cargo between Honolulu and Kawaihae. In Young Brothers’ more than 100 years of service, this is the third time a vessel has carried the Makaala name, which means alert and vigilant.
Her sister barge, the Hoomaka Hou, began service between Honolulu and Nawiliwili last November. These additions to the Young Brothers’ fleet are part of a $186 million investment announced in 2006 to provide greater benefits and service to customers across the state.
