Child care providers invited to new classes

People Attentative to Children, or PATCH, is introducing the newly revised series, “Basic Series: Intro to FCC” designed for potential family child care providers seeking guidance in starting their home business, addressing the requirements of the Department of Human Services administrative rules and providing quality care for young children.

The 10-workshop series will begin Tuesday in Waimea and on Aug. 13 in Kona. There is no fee; however, registration is required in advance. Call the PATCH office at 325-3800 to register and to find out about other classes on the summer schedule.


Kalili honored by credit union

Sonja Lee Kalili has been selected as the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s 2008 employee of the year. During its 71st annual membership meeting and banquet, it also recognized 130 years of combined service provided by longtime staff and volunteers.

Kalili has held numerous positions at the institution over her 18-plus years of service and currently serves as human resources coordinator. She was recognized for being the “go-to” person in all she does and is adept at juggling her many work responsibilities as well as her active family life.

Several staff members also were honored for their years of service at the organization, ranging from five to 35 years: Nellie Medeiros, 35 years; LeeAnn Ashimine, Mary Lou Ignacio and Judy Kawamura, 20 years; and Lilian Corbin, 5 years. Two volunteers, Diane S. Quitiquit and Ross Wilson Jr., were honored with 15-year service awards.


Purchases help feed the hungry

Kailua-Kona’s Island Lava Java is donating 10 percent of customers’ purchases as an ongoing campaign to help feed Hawaii Island’s less fortunate. All customers have to do is mention The Food Basket during their purchases and 10 percent will be donated to The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank.

Each dollar that is donated accounts for $9 worth of food that is distributed to the Food Basket’s partner agencies across Hawaii Island.

Solar electricity is topic for meeting

Solar electricity is being adopted by more and more Big Island homeowners and businesses. The public is invited to come and learn about new technologies and incentives for solar electricity at a free seminar on solar electric applications in Hawaii from 6 to 8 p.m. July 9 at Tutu’s House in Waimea.

ProVision Technologies Inc. will discuss issues relating to photovoltaic technologies, system design and financial incentives.
