Huggo’s program aids humane society

Huggo’s Restaurant now offers diners one more item on the menu — the opportunity to raise funds for Hawaii Island Humane Society. Huggo’s new “Dining for Doggies & Kitties Too” program will help improve the lives of animals across the Big Island.

Huggo’s has a longstanding tradition of charitable giving to improve the island community.

“As pet owners and pet lovers, we wanted to collaborate with Hawaii Island Humane Society and support programs that promote animal respect, cruelty prevention, pet overpopulation and simply enhance the bond between humans and animals,” said Huggo’s owner Eric von Platen Luder. “Our new Dining with Doggies & Kitties Too program offers up a simple way for restaurant patrons, both resident and visiting, to join together to make a difference.”

Contributions are easily made by adding a contribution on the donation line of the credit card slip. An explanatory program flyer accompanies each restaurant check.

Credit union honors volunteers, staff

Members of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union recently acknowledged long-time volunteers, honored their outgoing chairman of the board and presented awards to the employee of the year as well as service awards to staff members at its annual meeting and banquet.

A last “thud” of the ceremonial gavel by Chairman John Iwane at HCFCU’s annual meeting signaled the end of his 21-year term as leader of the financial institution and 47 years of volunteerism.

HCFCU’s annual meeting and banquet was also a celebration of its 70th anniversary. Chartered in 1936, HCFCU was the brain child of 10 coffee farmers determined to weather the financial storms of the Depression. Starting with 43 members who each paid a fee of 25 cents to join, the credit union today has accrued $293 million in assets and 34,275 members.

Two charter members — Michael Hirata and Richard Tanaka — joined the 70th anniversary celebration of more than 800 members May 12 at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, blowing the candles out on a ceremonial birthday cake.

Call Center Officer Kim Quirit was recognized as employee of the year. She was lauded for her willingness to take on the challenge of opening the call center and her subsequent leadership in handling the relocation of the center following the October 2006 earthquakes.
