Waimea market will feature orchids Saturday

Orchids plants and seminars will be featured from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Waimea Hawaiian Homestead Farmers Market.

In addition to the fresh produce, flowers and foods from more than 30 vendors, orchid vendors will display a wide variety of plants. Among those participating are Mathias Seelis of Wonderful Orchids with rare and mother plants for propagation, Hawaiian Vanilla Co. with its vanilla products derived from the vanilla orchid, Kalapana Tropicals and Quintal Farm.

At 9:30 a.m., orchid expert Bob Berky of Kamuela Greenhouse will talk about basic orchid growing. Berky, a certified orchid judge of the American Orchid Society, has been a commercial grower and hybridizer of orchids for more than 20 years. Following Berky, John Ramoa will demonstrate how to repot orchids; his specialty is cymbidiums.

“First Saturday” at the Waimea market is when an expanded roster of vendors come to the market. Customers can expect to find naturally raised, grass-fed beef and lamb from Kahua Ranch, organic wilelaiki and lehua blossom honeys from Big Island Bees and hearts of palm from Wailea Ag Group among the many Hawaii island products.

Breakfast chef Joung Nakamoto will be offering hot saimin, eggs and other food specialties as she does each week at the Nakamoto Farm booth. Moulin Rouge crepes and Peruvian tamales are available for breakfast, too. There are many snacks, baked goods and prepared foods to eat while talking with farmers and learning about farming in the Waimea community.

The Waimea Hawaiian Homestead Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning on Mamalahoa Highway just two miles east of Waimea. For more information, call Roen Hufford at 937-2729.

Mauna Lani Resort home takes BIA grand award

Kamaaina-style architecture combined with natural materials earned Brookfield Homes Hawaii the grand award in the New Residential Division at this year’s Building Industry Association of Hawaii’s Renaissance Awards. Brookfield’s KaMilo model home at Mauna Lani Resort took top honors in the highly competitive category of New Residential Division, which includes homes priced from $750,001 to $2 million.

Designed and built as a community of second homes for vacation and entertaining, KaMilo at Mauna Lani Resort captures a sense of place through the use of natural materials such as stone and ohia posts and kamaaina architectural features including double-pitched roofs, exposed rafters and large open-air lanai. The model home that was entered for the competition also features an open floor plan that allows for indoor and outdoor living.
