Culinary workshops planned this summer
The Hawaii Community College Office of Continuing Education and Training offers summer culinary workshops at its Kealakekua campus.
Hands-on instruction for beginning students, industry professionals, amateur cooks and anyone interested in developing their culinary art skills will be held 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.
Three sessions are planned. “Session I: Oriental Pacific” meets June 11 through 22, “Session II: American Classic” is held June 25 through July 6 with no class on July 4 and “Session III: European” meets July 9 through 20.
Tuition for each session is $389 and includes all food, recipes and menus. Student dress and some materials and equipment are required.

Dolphin Days returns during June
The 13th annual Dolphin Days Summer Fest at Hilton Waikoloa Village is slated for June 14 through 17.
The festival will feature innovative Hawaiian cuisine, jazz all-stars, dolphin encounters, golf and tennis tournaments, and the Great Waikoloa Food, Wine & Music Festival. The annual festival benefits Hawaii Shriners Hospital for Children and the Pacific Marine Life Foundation.
Highlights include: a tasting with Bravo Network’s “Top Chef” finalists Marcel Vigneron and Elia Aboumrad, a Hot Rocks Luau at Volcano Bar, Hawaii’s top chefs featuring culinary specialties paired with fine wine selections and jazz entertainers Deniece Williams, Kenny Rankin and Paul Jackson Jr.

Wichman will speak to landscaping group
Chipper Wichman, director of the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai, is scheduled to speak at a public meeting sponsored by the Hawaii Island Landscape Association on May 11. The dinner meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kona Outdoor Circle Education Center. Wichman speaks at 7 p.m., and the public is welcome at no charge to the talk.
The dinner portion of the meeting is planned as an informational membership drive as well as a celebration for HILA members. The evening begins with a social mixer followed by a dinner of Hawaiian food and an awa drink bowl.
Wichman’s PowerPoint presentation, “A Dream Fulfilled,” helps tell the history of the NTBG from its original mission and the act of Congress that established it to the current array of gardens and programs that carry on the garden’s mission and goals.
The dinner and talk are offered at $15 for HILA members and $25 for nonmembers. Door prizes will be given at the end of the meeting to dinner guests.

Childcare providers invited to event
People Attentative to Children is joining childcare organizations nationwide to declare May 11 to be Provider Appreciation Day.
All childcare providers are invited to attend PATCH’s first Provider Appreciation Day Conference on May 12 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo campus. All who care for children in a variety of settings such as family child care, center-based care, parent and play groups, home-visitors, family, friend and neighbor care are welcome to attend this event.
