Sylvan Learning Center has opened a new center in Kailua-Kona. Sylvan offers a variety of educational programs and services for students of all ages who are struggling or just aren’t being challenged enough.
Cheryl Merk, executive director of the Big Island Sylvan Learning Centers, said, “At Sylvan Learning Center, we get kids excited about learning and it shows. We know when kids feel better about school, they feel better about themselves.”
The new center in Kailua-Kona offers programs in reading, math, algebra, writing and study skills.
Its approach to supplemental education goes far beyond tutoring; it focuses on individual learning styles. Sylvan’s trained and certified personal instructors will use a unique combination of standardized tests, diagnostic tools and personal interviews (including vision and hearing screening) to create a blueprint that illustrates the learning areas that need attention. Sylvan will use that information to work with the child’s family to develop a personalized program addressing the skill gaps for the child.

Pisano to discuss self-healing technique
Dr. Susan Pisano will share information on the Neural Organization Technique, a specialty of applied kinesiology, which is used to access answers to perplexing health problems, during a free program at 7 p.m. Thursday at James Walker Hall at St. Augustine’s Church in Kapaau.
The kinesiological chiropractic technique uses the energy systems and acupuncture meridians to assess the functioning of the nervous system on the physical, mental, chemical, emotional and spiritual levels. These techniques, combined with proper stances, can be used for self-care and can help to relieve chronic, painful conditions that don’t respond to ordinary, conventional treatment.
Pisano has taught the Toftness technique and had a practice in Santa Fe, N.M., from 1993 to 2007. She now owns Quantum Chiropratic in Pie Town, N.M. She has studied shamanism, kung fu, chi gung and several other specialties within chiropractic medicine.
