‘Hometown Heroes’ program helps residents
D.R. Horton-Schuler is offering a special incentive to policemen, firefighters, teachers, nurses or military personnel on the island of Hawaii. The “Hometown Heroes” program, which began this past January, offers these presently employed public service workers an additional incentive of 1 percent off of the total contract price of a home in the Lualai at Parker Ranch or Pualani Estates communities in addition to other incentives offered to other buyers.
“If this program didn’t come along, we’d be struggling a lot more to afford a home,” said Kristina Erskine, a teacher at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School and one of the first home buyers in Lualai at Parker Ranch to participate in the “Hometown Heroes” program.
“Sometimes jobs can feel thankless, but with this program I feel more appreciated in the community.”
“This is our way of thanking the men and women who dedicated their lives to serving our communities,” said Mike Jones, division president. “The ‘Hometown Heroes’ program makes homeownership a possibility — and a reality — for local residents who are committed to the welfare of society. We look forward to offering similar programs in our community developments throughout the state.”
Lanihua Center feting St. Patrick’s Day
A St. Patrick’s Day family celebration is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Lanihau Center. Free Irish keiki crafts, a penny whistle demonstration, Irish folk storytelling and live traditional Irish music are planned.
Free gifts will be given to the first 100 people attending the event.
Yoga center offering introductory classes
The Big Island Yoga Center is offering an eight-week introductory series of yoga classes on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon beginning March 31 and continuing through May 19. These classes are designed for students new to yoga, as well as for former students seeking to renew their interest.
The cost of the series is $80. Space is limited.
The Big Island Yoga Center is in Kealakekua at 81-6623 Mamalahoa Hwy., across from First Hawaiian Bank.
