New to the Kona Brewers Festival lineup this year, the Inaugural Kona Brewers Fest Golf Open will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Golfers of all levels are welcome to play at this four-person scramble using the Peoria scoring system, a format for one-day friendly tournaments because it evens the competition. Island Chevrolet is providing the opportunity to win a new Silverado 4×4 for the first player who shoots a hole-in-one on a specified hole. Cost for 18 holes of golf is $125. Chocolate Festival seeks chefs of all kinds

All Big Island amateur and professional chefs and candy makers are invited to show off their culinary talents at the sixth annual Kona Chocolate Festival on March 24 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.

Presented by Kona Pacific Waldorf School, the mission of the Kona Chocolate Festival is to present an event that entertains both visitors and residents of the Big Island; showcases the creative talents of fine Big Island chefs, chocolatiers, ice cream and candy makers; and provides a means to highlight cacao farming and support the chocolate industry in Hawaii.

In 2006, more than 1,500 visitors and local residents attended the festival.

The festival will again feature a chocolate taste-off competition with awards in professional and amateur categories. Entries will be judged by international culinary personalities and selected local professional chefs, as well as by attendees through “people’s choice” nominations. Savory chocolate creations are encouraged. Chefs are invited to prepare an appetizer, entree or dessert — as long as it’s made with chocolate.

Day-time educational and informative seminars about cacao cultivating and processing, medicinal uses for chocolate and cooking with chocolate also are planned.

The evening gala will also include a silent auction, live music, wine and champagne by the Kona Wine Market and other fine Big Island purveyors and specialty beer by Kona Brewing Co.

Contact Brian Cisneros at 854-1109 or send e-mail to gala@konachocolatefestival.com or visit www.konachocolatefestival.com for more information or to obtain an entry form.

Brewers Festival slated for March 10

The 12th annual Kona Brewers Festival, presented by The Gas Co. and First Hawaiian Bank, will tap up a wave of more than 60 types of ales and lagers, served alongside delectable island-style cuisine from 25 Hawaii chefs on March 10. The sell-out event features craft beer, food, live music and entertainment outdoors on the shore of Kailua Bay at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Other events leading up to the Kona Brewers Festival include a beer and food pairing dinner, “Grilling Under the Stars — A Brewers’ Paina,” at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on March 8 and a charity golf tournament at Big Island Country Club on March 9.

At the main event, each of 35 breweries from Hawaii and the mainland United States will tap up two types of beer and chefs from 25 of Hawaii’s top restaurants will serve a tropical cornucopia of gourmet food. Hula and oli (chant) will announce the beginning of the event. Three rocking musical acts — Nicole Fournier, Ono Gumbo and Aloha Nui — will provide musical entertainment throughout the day. The annual Trash Fashion Show, designed to raise awareness of the importance of recycling, will show off attire made from recycled material such as bottle caps, cardboard and tires.

Tickets to the Kona Brewers Festival are available in advance only. Cost is $45 and includes a commemorative event mug, eight four-ounce brew tasting coupons, unlimited samplings of gourmet cuisine and an afternoon of entertainment.

Tickets to “Grilling Under the Stars — A Brewers’ Paina” are $45 and available at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort catering office or by calling 808-324-2554.
