Finding employees is focus for luncheon

A luncheon sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Business on “Finding & Keeping Great Employees for Kona’s Small Businesses” will be held at noon Nov. 2 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m.

The featured speakers will be Debbie Padello, Stuart Ho and Melissa Pavlicek. They will provide small businesses with practical hiring tips, effective low-cost employee retention strategies and discuss survival and success in Kona’s tight labor market.

Padello is the director of human resources at ALTRES HR, where she is responsible for managing the human resources needs for more than 400 Hawaii businesses. She has more than 10 years of management and human resources experience.

Ho is the president of AARP in Hawaii and will speak about finding great older employees and nontraditional employment arrangements.

Pavlicek is the Hawaii state director for NFIB. She is an attorney and government relations professional and has served as the vice chairwoman of the Hawaii State Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section.

The event will be co-sponsored by AARP Hawaii.

The cost to attend is $25 for NFIB and AARP members who register by Oct. 30 and $30 for nonmembers and at the door. Reservations can be made by calling NFIB at (808) 523-3695.

NFIB is a nonprofit organization representing more than 1,000 businesses in Hawaii.

Credit union promotes Kanai

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union recently announced the promotion of Arnold Kanai to vice president of support services.

In his new role, Kanai will manage the administrative and support service activities at the credit union, have overall supervisory responsibility for electronic services, compliance, security and facilities management, conduct analyses of business trends and existing performance indicators and make recommendations for the strategic direction of the department including target growth goals.

Kanai was hired as the credit union’s support services manager in 2006. Prior to joining the financial institution, Kanai served as branch manager for Central Pacific Bank in Kailua-Kona. He also held various manager positions at other Big Island financial institutions, including Finance Factors Ltd., Norwest Financial Hawaii Inc. and American Savings Bank. He brings to the credit union more than 20 years of experience in the finance industry.
