New bead store
opened July 19

Candy Sargent, a member of the local Greenwell coffee family, and partner Crystal Kannegaard opened Big Island Beads and More July 19 with a traditional blessing offered in Hawaiian by Billy Paris.

Big Island Beads and More, a community exchange for artists and customers to share beading and other artistic crafts, will offer ongoing classes in beading, block printing, weaving and more. Members of the artistic community are also invited to offer classes in the arts they are involved in.

The store is located at 81-6645 D Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua.


Jack’s Diving
Locker receives environmental awards

Jack’s Diving Locker has been honored twice this summer with awards concerning the environment. Jack’s Diving Locker received the 2009 Pualu Award for Environmental Awareness from the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. Pualu means “to work together.” This award recognizes Jack’s and its staff for their contributions and actions in conserving the marine environment of Hawaii. In addition, Jack’s Diving Locker has educational programs for visitors, kamaaina and kids that emphasize marine conservation.

Jack’s Diving Locker also received the 2009 Keeping it Green Hawaii award from Recycle Hawaii. Jack’s Diving Locker regularly participates in shoreline and underwater clean-ups as well as having a recycling program at their business. The company promotes sustainability with its inception and continuous work with the Day Use Mooring project.
