Local credit union honored by chamber

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union recently was presented the Pualu Community Service Award for Business Innovation by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. Pualu means “to work together,” and the chamber’s award program recognizes individuals and businesses in the community that work together to make a difference in West Hawaii.

HCFCU was recognized for being committed to improving and enhancing its employees’ lives. The credit union was honored for focusing on building a success-oriented culture to attract and retain the best talent and make it a place where people desire to work. HCFCU was chosen to receive the award based on its demonstration of excellence, leadership, creativity and uniqueness in the Business Innovation category.


Drs. Scheel and Traub relocate their offices

Dr. Monica Scheel and Dr. Michael Traub celebrated the relocation of their offices to 73-5618 Maiau St., Suite A204, Kamanu Center, Kailua-Kona, with a blessing, which was held July 1. Officiating the ceremony was Danny Akaka Jr.

Scheel is a board certified dermatologist who graduated from pharmacy school in 1985. She completed her medical school training at the University of Texas Southwestern in 1995. After completing an internship in internal medicine and a three-year dermatology residency at the University of Texas at Galveston Medical School in 1999, she practiced in Texas three years prior to moving to Hawaii in 2002.

Since 1986, Traub has been director of an integrated health care center, Hoo Lokahi in Kailua-Kona. In 1996, he was the first naturopathic physician in contemporary times to be appointed to a hospital staff at North Hawaii Community Hospital.

From 2001 to 2003, Traub served as president of the American Association of Natur-opathic Physicians. In 2006, he was honored by the AANP as “Physician of the Year.”


Mielcke selected credit union board chairman

William F. Mielcke, retired development executive and a veteran of Hawaii’s visitor industry, is the new chairman of the board for Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union.

Mielcke was tapped by his fellow board members to lead the multimillion dollar financial institution following the retirement of Chairman John Iwane.

Formerly president and chief executive officer of Mauna Kea Properties, Mielcke has served on the Hawaii County Planning Commission, the Urban Land Institute’s Recreational Development Council, Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference, Kohala Coast Resort Association and the Hawaii Health System Corporation. He has been a member of HCFCU’s board of directors since 2004.
