Tsai to discuss training aids with Lions

The Kailua-Kona Lions Club meets at noon Wednesday at the LEAD Center Cafe on Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona. Early arrival is suggested for those ordering lunch.

The speaker will be Iwalani Tsai from Kona Community Hospital. Tsai will discuss the training aids the Lions Club is providing for the hospital’s education program. The speaker will have available infant CPR models and defibrillator equipment used in the continuing education of nurses and staff.

A work project to repair tables at Hale Halawai will be discussed, along with plans for the annual pancake breakfast on March 18 at Hale Halawai. Tickets for the breakfast are available from any Kailua-Kona Lion.


Kona Kupuna Singles Club meets for dinner

Canadian picnic slated for Thursday

The annual Canadian potluck get-together begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at Old Kona Airport Park pavilion No. 3. Those attending should bring a chair, cutlery, plates, drinks and a dish to share.

Full Life director speaking to hui

West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the conference/meeting room at West Hawaii Community Health Center, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway, Kailua-Kona. The meeting room is located downstairs on the east side.

The hui welcomes Stone Wolfsong, Full Life executive director. Stone will share the history of Full Life, which was founded by a local family to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities, like their son, could live self-determined lives on Hawaii Island. She will share how the services for individuals with developmental disabilities are funded in the state and how individuals qualify for those services. How the community can support individuals with developmental disabilities will also be discussed.

The hui is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals. It was formed in September 1999 to encourage collaboration on matters affecting youth and families. There are more than 45 organizations and individuals in the hui.

Jeffrey teaching photography sessions

The public is invited to join award-winning photographer and wildlife biologist Jack Jeffrey for sessions of photographing the splendor of Hawaii’s natural environment.

Jeffrey offers “Hawaii Nature Photography: Field Work, Instruction and Critique” in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 5 The public is invited to sign up for either day or both.

Participants will learn to photograph scenics, plants, flowers, insects, birds (only if visible) and other native natural history subjects the way the professionals do. Various aspects of photography will be discussed including equipment, exposure, composition, lighting, scenic photography, close-up photography and photo ethics.

Selected photos taken each day by participants will be reviewed and critiqued, and information will be provided to help improve participants’ photography abilities.

This seminar will be limited to 10 participants each day, so people are encouraged to sign up early.

This event is presented by the Hawaii Volcanoes Institute, a program of the Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a nonprofit organization. For one day only (Saturday or Sunday), the program cost is $70 for Friends members and $100 for nonmembers. For both days, the program cost is $125 for Friends members and $175 for nonmembers. Students (K-12 and college with valid student ID) are half-price. Nonmembers are welcome to join the Friends in order to get the member discount.

Cancer support group meets Thursday

“You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a cancer support group, meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The group is open to all cancer survivors and co-survivors.

Meetings are held the first and third Thursdays of the month. There is no fee. Light refreshments are served.
