SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY

Harbor Gallery is holding its annual Winter Wood Show from now through Feb. 11. More than 40 pieces are on exhibit and featured on the website from over 20 Big Island wood artists, all available for purchase.

Ten percent of the show proceeds will go to the Kohala Watershed Partnership, which is helping to restore the native forest in the watershed above Pelekane Bay in Kawaihae. In the past two years, gallery owners Gunner and Elli Mench have given more than $16,000 to Kohala Watershed Partnership from the two wood shows they hold each year.

All but one of the pieces are exhibited in the gallery located next to Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae, where there is a solid wood sculpture of a pod of seven spinner dolphins created by artist Scott Hare and stretching over 14 feet in length mounted to a wall inside the restaurant. Visitors to the show are encouraged to vote by ballot for their favorite pieces in the four categories of sculpture, joinery, turning and open. Winners in each category will receive a $100 prize at the end of the show, and the overall winner with the most votes receives a $250 prize and bragging rights.

The show and gallery are open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call Harbor Gallery at 882-1510, email gunner@harborgallery.biz or visit harborgallery.biz to view the show online.
