Kohala High schedules homecoming parade
Kohala High School will host its annual homecoming parade Saturday. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Kamehameha Park and proceed west on Akoni Pule Highway to Kohala High School. The road will be closed from about 9:45 to 11:15 a.m.

Boat cruise benefits historical society
The Kona Historical Society is planning a fundraising historical sunset cruise from 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 5. The tour starts and ends at Keauhou Bay and includes Kahaluu, Kealakekua and Honaunau bays aboard the catamaran Fair Wind II.
Kamaaina John Mitchell provides a historical narrative prepared by Kona historian Jean Greenwell on the holua at Keauhou, the battle of Kuamoo, Kealakekua Bay, the battle of Mokuohai at Keei and Puuhonua o Honaunau. The sightings of whales and dolphins are often an added treat.
Reservations are $65 for society members and $75 for nonmembers. Members will be asked to show their membership cards to receive the discount. Check-in time is 1:45 p.m. at Keauhou Pier. There will be a no-host bar aboard.

Luahine hula festival lists entertainment
The He Lei Hiwa No Iolani Luahine Hula Festival from Thursday through Saturday at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort has announced its entertainment schedule.
An ukulele jam with Keoki Kahumoku begins at 4 p.m. Thursday on the resort’s luau grounds.
A concert featuring Diana Aki is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday on the luau grounds.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Ladies of Waikui (and Kona Bob) featuring Hapaialii present an authentic Hawaiian luau show on the luau grounds.
Tickets are by donation, with a suggested donation of $10, and are available at the door.
Mauna Loa Road closing for repairs
The mauka part of Mauna Loa Road, known locally as Mauna Loa Strip Road, is closed for repairs during daylight hours, through Wednesday, weather permitting, as road improvement projects continue at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Mauna Loa Road will reopen at night and during the weekend.
Crews are patching the pavement along the first two-mile section of the narrow road, just past Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park). Kipuka Puaulu and the tree molds remain open, but Kipuka Ki, Mauna Loa Lookout and the park’s backcountry trail off Mauna Loa Strip Road are not accessible.
The road will reopen daily when crews finish work, at approximately 5 p.m. Mauna Loa Strip Road is a popular vantage point for residents and visitors wanting to observe the glow from the lava lake within Halemaumau after dark.
Drivers are also reminded to pay attention to, and be respectful of, traffic control personnel directing vehicles within the main section of park, where several road improvement projects continue. There are no road closures within the main section of the park.
Staffing shortage closes Pahala library
Pahala Public and School Library will close temporarily from Monday through Feb. 23 because of a staffing shortage. The book drop is closed. The library and book drop are scheduled to reopen Feb. 24.
While the library is closed, patrons may visit the Naalehu Public Library at 95-5669 Mamalahoa Highway. Call the Naalehu library at 939-2442 for its current public service hours and to arrange for the pickup of requested items.
Patrons may also log on to the Hawaii State Public Library System website at librarieshawaii.org to browse its catalog for book titles, eBooks, digital audio books and online databases, which provide access to full-text materials from thousands of magazines, newspapers, journals and other publications; and to obtain answers to brief informational reference questions by using the Ask-A-Librarian E-Reference service by selecting the Information tab, click on E-Reference and follow the instructions. A library card is not required to use this service.
Artists group plans meeting for Jan. 29
The Society for Kona’s Education and Art will hold its annual membership celebration from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 29 at its building. Live music by Sakura, an exhibition of art by the South Kona Artists Group, potluck pupus, a silent auction, kanikapila and brief election of officers are planned.
