Federal budget

Fund social programs over military spending

The war in Iraq has ended, but the budget deficits are bigger than ever. The budget debate in Congress is an opportunity to be sure the military budget is scaled down to reflect modern economic realities.

As Hawaii struggles to recover from the recession, economic recovery and the social services safety net should be prioritized over military spending.

I hope my senators and representative will support cutting the Pentagon budget, which takes up a huge percentage of our federal spending and our tax dollars, yet it is full of waste and can’t even pass an audit.

Congress should make some real cuts in Pentagon spending to help bring the budget back under control.

Grow up, Hawaii

What is it with the Democrats on this island? After voting them (our present legislators and Gov. Neil Ambercrombie) in and letting them rule the state for more than 50 years, creating the mess we are currently in, you would think the people would come to their senses.

We now have the opportunity to elect a good person who cares about Hawaii to the House of Representatives (Linda Lingle) and we have people going around tearing stickers that support her off our cars and shoving them down the windshield. Haven’t people on Hawaii heard of free speech?

I can almost understand the things that have happened to my truck, it is covered with anti-Obama stickers and those showing support for our troops (another thing they seem to have a problem with here), so the dings, dented bumper, door slamming don’t surprise or bother me. I have never done damage, torn off a sticker, marked up a sticker or car because of someone else’s support of any one, no matter how much we disagreed with them.

Grow up Hawaii, stand on your own two feet and quit letting the unions or family patriarchs tell you who to support and vote for. Freedom of choice is what it’s about.
