SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY

Recycle Hawaii announces its seventh annual Art of Recycling School Competition, a juried exhibit of recycle art by students. For 2012, three separate competitions and exhibits will be held across Hawaii Island during April to coincide with islandwide Earth Day events.

The Art of Recycling School Competition strives to increase environmental awareness and encourage recycling and sustainable practices at schools and in the community. Youth ages 6 to 18 years from public, independent, charter and home schools or community youth organizations are eligible to submit original creations made in class or at home from recycled or reusable materials.

Young artists choose one or more of the following themes to focus their artwork: reduce, reuse, recycle; island sustainability; preserving/protecting Hawaii’s natural environment; or zero waste. Entries are judged on originality, theme, personal expression, execution of materials and artistic merit.

Cash prizes are awarded to first, second and third place winners for individual and group (by two or more students) categories in elementary, middle and high school levels. Nonmonetary awards are presented to select kindergarten entries. Winners are announced and awards presented at each district opening reception.

Artwork is submitted at the appropriate district site on the following dates: April 7 in Kailua-Kona for the West district of Kailua-Kona to Naalehu; April 14 in Waimea for the North district of Laupahoehoe to Waikoloa; and on April 21 in Hilo for the East district of Pahala to Hilo/Papaikou.

Teachers, parents or adult leaders are urged to register their class or child by March 31. To register or schedule a competition presentation for a class or group, call 985-8725 or email hiartrecycle@gmail.com.

Since dates, times and locations are subject to change, visit recyclehawaii.org and click on “Art of Recycling” before submitting entries or to see past entries.
