SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY

Nearly 300 Kealakehe Elementary families enjoyed an “ABC Read to Me” literacy event for children and parents Nov. 17. Families traded gently used books at the book swap, nibbled snacks, then gathered to hear about the importance of reading aloud to children of all ages and receive tips on family literacy.

Principal Nancy Matsukawa shared the Kealakehe November Book of the Month, “One Green Apple” by Eve Bunting. Following this, all children from toddlers to fifth-graders moved to age-appropriate Read Aloud sessions with guest readers to enjoy good books. Adults were entertained by Kealakehe High School Librarian Jerrie Anderson and adult reader Mason Farish, who shared humorous reading materials.

Families regrouped to receive prizes and enjoy free pizza and cookies.

The next event is scheduled for Jan. 26.
