Liz Miller will teach metal tooling basics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.
In this introductory class, participants will learn how to create metal bas-relief art work in 36-gauge aluminum. At the end of the class, students will have a finished product to hang on the wall. After experimenting with various wooden and other embossing tools to create surface textures, participants will learn the process of creating an overall composition of one’s choosing (realistic or abstract).
For participants who have taken the basics class and want to take it to the next level, an advanced class will follow.
The class fee is $65 plus $10 for materials with member discounts and financial aid available. Advance registration required by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Live opera series continues on Jan. 21
“The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” series continues with a new production, “The Enchanted Island,” inspired by the musical pastiches of the Baroque period with top opera stars. The concert will be screened at 12:55 p.m. Jan. 21 at Makalapua Cinema in Kailua-Kona.
The series is presented by Hollywood Theaters and Hoku Concert Series in association with Kahilu Theatre and Aloha Performing Arts Company.

Silk painting class offered by Dolsberry
Local silk painter Debra Dolsberry will conduct a two-session silk painting class on Jan. 21 and 28. Dolsberry will cover the basics of applying dye on silk using Jacquard dyes.
Students will complete two free-form scarves the first week and two simple motif scarves the second week.
