SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY

Maceo Parker, whose name is synonymous with funky music, will be playing at 8 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Kahilu Theatre. Ticket prices range from $25 to $65.

Parker has played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as “like being at University”; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; and stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He is the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of funk in one golden thread; the cipher that unravels dance music down to its core.

For the past 16 years, Parker has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960s soul and George Clinton’s 1970 freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. His collaborations over the years have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band, Prince and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base.

Parker has grown to become the linchpin of the James Brown enclave for the best part of two decades. His signature style helped define James’ brand of funk, and the phrase: “Maceo, I want you to Blow!” passed into the language. He’s still the most sampled musician around simply because of the unique quality of his sound.

Parker’s performance is sponsored by Waianuhea LLC.

The Kahilu Theatre Foundation is supported by the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the State Legislature; by the National Endowment for the Arts; by grants from various charitable foundations; Hawaii Tourism Authority; County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development; and by individual and corporate donations.
