SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY
Barbara Denman is Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of January.
Denman’s versatility of expression and the desire to explore various art forms has led this artist through music and dance, painting and into gourd design.
While music, her first love was studied at New Mexico State University and the University of Texas, her move to Kailua-Kona and a workshop in watercolor launched her into a serious painting career. Before her move, she spent several years designing ladies clothing for her own manufacturing business.
Many workshops and continued study have added acrylic and silk paintings to her watercolor repertoire.
Denman also grows, designs, carves and decorates ipu (gourds) using the umeke pawahe method. This is a very ancient method where the gourd is dyed from the inside out. Her designer gourds have won several judges and peoples awards.
Her paintings, as well as her gourd designs feature organic flora and fauna, as well as the marine life of Hawaii and other original designs.
She invites the public to see her latest work and talk story at the Alii Sunset Gallery on Jan. 19 and 24. She will be at the Keauhou Beach Outrigger Resort on Jan. 31.
