Waimea flea market open Saturday
The indoor flea market at New Hope Waimea Gym takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 7. The gym is located at Church Row, next to Cherry Blossom Park, across the street from the Waimea Police Station. Workshop for farmers, gardeners slated Jan. 14
Kona County Farm Bureau, in cooperation with Kamehameha Schools and the Kona Soil and Water Conservation District, is sponsoring an informative workshop for farmers, gardeners and those who want to grow edibles. The workshop is designed as an introductory and fact-finding session to launch a series of classes on the topic. It will begin at 9 a.m. Jan. 14 at Kona Producers Coop Marshalling Yard behind The Food Basket building on Kuakini Highway just north of Honalo.
The event will open with a brief meet-and-greet followed by a short address from Kamehameha Schools. The Kona County Farm Bureau will host a panel of farmers and growers sharing information on the importance of growing food for Hawaii’s food security and offering helpful tips for getting started.
Chef Devin Lowder has planned a lunch that incorporates ingredients from local growers. Recipes and growing information will be presented during the meal.
The lunch will be followed by a presentation from Mary Robblee about help that is available to local farmers through the Kona Soil and Water Conservation District and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Following Robblee’s presentation will be a short survey and question-and-answer period ending at 2 p.m. Both KCFB and KS are planning to follow this introductory session with an ongoing education program in growing edibles.
The KCFB Marshalling Yard is between mile marker 114 and 115 on the mauka side of Kuakini Highway just north of Honalo at the driveway marked with a white mailbox reading “79-1016A E. Honalo”. Fish tacos focus of cooking demonstration
Abbey Golden will demonstrate three quick recipes for a “Super-Fast Fish Taco Feast” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. She will prepare creamy chipotle wedge salad, a four-ingredient black bean soup and fish tacos with lime-cilantro crema.
The class is sponsored by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, Culture and Arts Department.
The class fee is $15 and includes recipes and food tasting.

Donkey Mill offers 10-week ukulele building workshop

Senator Green speaks at hospital auxiliary meeting
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary will have Senator Josh Green, MD, as the keynote speaker for its annual general membership meeting.
As the current Health Committee Chair and emergency physician at Kohala Hospital, Green will discuss today’s health care climate, as well as the key bills in the new legislative session. He will also talk about the challenges and opportunities that rural health facilities face including physician recruitment and retention.
Everyone is invited. The meeting will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Kona Community Hospital Conference Rooms 2 and 3. Green’s presentation will take place at 12:15 p.m.
In addition, the new slate of Auxiliary officers for 2012 and information pertaining to volunteer activities will be announced.
Kealakehe Intermediate SCC slated to meet
Kealakehe Intermediate parents and concerned community members are invited to the School Community Council meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the school library’s workroom.
Principal Don Merwin will share the assurance document he will send to the state Department of Education with the academic plan for school year 2012-2013. Also to be discussed are school uniforms, data on English Language Learners/Special Education and overall school performance over the past five years and planning council elections.
Honaunau School Community Council meets Wednesday
Honaunau School will be holding its School Community Council meeting at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend as the principal, Noreen Kunitomo, will be reviewing the final draft of the academic and financial plan.
