Volcano update focus of talk Wednesday
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory volcanologist Mike Poland will present “What’s up with Hawaii’s volcanoes … and how do we know?”, an informative and engaging talk about the current status of Hawaii’s active volcanoes, how they are monitored and recent events on Kilauea Volcano.
The talk will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kealakehe High School cafeteria. Free and open to the public, the event is part of Hawaii Island’s third annual Volcano Awareness Month in January 2012.

Kealakehe Project Grad committee meets
Kealakehe High Project Grad Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kealakehe High School conference room on the north side of the school library. All interested parents, relatives and community supporters who want to help with the 2012 event scheduled for May 19 are encouraged to attend.

Kealakehe Project Grad is an annual event providing a safe location for graduating seniors of Kealakehe High School and West Hawaii Explorations Academy to celebrate with their friends and enjoy an all-night, alcohol- and drug-free event.
Since the inception of Project Grad 10 years ago, Kealakehe High School has not had any traffic-related fatalities on graduation night.

Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Waimea Civic Center in Waimea.

Traffic safety group meets Jan. 12
Kona Traffic Safety Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Jan. 12. The committee creates an opportunity for concerned community members to meet with county and state officials who can help mitigate safety problems.
The group meets the second Thursday of each month in the Community Halau, Building G of the West Hawaii Community Center on Kealakakehe Parkway.
There is plenty of parking in the makai parking lot next to Building G.
Free meditation at Island Spirit Spa on Wednesdays
Island Spirit Healing Center and Day Spa in Kealakekua offers a free weekly meditation session from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Community members and visitors are welcome to attend. Beginners are encouraged to join us. Chairs and cushions are provided.
