HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit
Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross country course.
Bieni Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, died in June 2009 after a battle against breast cancer.
All net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102. The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Medals will be awarded to the top two overall male and female finishers and to the top three male and female finishers in each age division. Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9. All preregistered participants are guaranteed a tech shirt and goodie bag.
The entry fee for dogs is $10 and includes dog goodies in the owner’s goodie bag. There will be a special “Top Dog” award for the first dog to cross the finish line. For more information, contact Liz Noetzel at 989-9100 or HPArace@gmail.com.
Kohala offers volleyball, basketball
The Kohala Community Athletic Association is sponsoring a volleyball league for grades 4-8 and Biddy basketball for ages 5-8.
Free registration for both sports will be 4-5 p.m. Aug. 7 and 11 at Hisaoka Gym. Registration for volleyball includes uniforms.
Practices are scheduled for the second half of August, and games September through mid-October.

Waimea offers bubble ball soccer league
Parks & Rec Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding registrations for an indoor bubble ball soccer league from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 at Thelma Parker Gym.
Games will played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rosters are limited to six players, 12 years to adults. There are eight teams in the league.

Waimea offers instructional tennis
Parks & Rec Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding sign-ups for instructional tennis at Waimea Park tennis courts.
The free clinics are instructed by certified tennis pro Jeff Lewis, Director of Rutger Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Clinics will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 18. The program will be limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 group and 10 and older.

Parks & Rec Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will hold Biddy basketball clinics and league.
The clinics will be Aug. 11-13 at Thelma Parker gym. Registration starts at 3 p.m. Clinics will begin at 3:30 for ages 5-6 and at 4:30 for ages 7-8.
The league will be Sept. 15 to Oct. 22. The games will be played at various gyms, starting at 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Horseshoe club to start 4th league play
The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will begin its fourth league play of 2014 on Thursday at the horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.
Membership is required for this eight-week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Play is from 4-6 p.m. Thursdays, with a weekly fee of $5. For more information, call Reggie at 756-8085 or Al at 322-7085.

HCC summer series kicks off
The Hawaii Cycling Club presents the new “Sea to Mauna Loa” on Aug. 9. The race, more than 40 miles, will start on Waikoloa Beach Road at Queens’ Marketplace. More details are being developed.
The popular 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” occurs at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the Veterans Cemetery heading north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at the 85-mile marker. Registration is at Veterans Cemetery from 7–7:40 a.m.
Special Olympics coaches needed
Special Olympics West Hawaii is looking for soccer coaches. Practices and games are underway at Old Kona Airport Park fields from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 10.
Basketball coaches are also wanted for the Winter Games. The season runs from September through November.
