Konawaena holds winter meeting

Konawaena High will conduct a meeting Nov. 12 for parents whose children are planning to participate in a winter sport.

The meeting, which is required annually, will be held in the school cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. A parent who has already attended a meeting this school year has met the requirement.

Each student planning to participate in a sport must have had a current physical exam and a parental consent form.

Honokaa seeks baseball coach

Honokaa High is accepting applications for the boys varsity baseball head coach position.

Applications are available from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the main office, and can be submitted at the main office or the athletic director’s office in the gym. The deadline for applications is Nov. 14.

Jamie Koizumi, a former USGA Junior Amateur who played golf at Duke University and professionally in the U.S. and Japan, and now is Assistant Pro at Waikoloa Beach Resort, gives an update on the Asia Pacific Junior Cup. The Ryder Cup-style event on Nov. 8-11 at Waikoloa Kings’ Course will feature top junior golfers from Hawaii and Japan.

Dalen Yamauchi, a member of the University of Hawaii at Hilo golf team, was a medalist at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate tournament at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.

Horseshoe club holds ‘Turkey’ tourney

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will be hold its 30th “Turkey Toss” on Nov. 22 at the horseshoe pits at Old Kona Airport Park.

This is an open, nonsanctioned doubles tournament — 50-point game, all points count. Higher ringer percentage players will be designated as “A” players; “B” players will draw an A player from the hat to be his team player. Players of all levels are welcome.

Sign-in is at 7:30 a.m., and play starts at 8.

The entry fee is $20 per player. Prizes include hams, turkeys, bags of rice, and much more. There will be a banquet.

Sign up at the Palm Courts from 4 to 6 p.m Thursday. Deadline for entries is Saturday.

Cowhorse event at Parker

The Hawaii Island Cutting Horse Association is holding its annual Big Island Cowhorse Championship show Saturday-Sunday at Paniolo Park at Parker Ranch arena.

The free event starts at 9 a.m. each day and features a silent auction both days. There will be concession.

Parks and Rec offers tennis, crafts

The Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a youth tennis program and Thanksgiving craft activitiy.

Youth tennis: The clinic for ages 10-17 is scheduled to run 3:30-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday, Nov. 5 to Dec. 11 at the courts at Old Kona Airport Park. The program is free; participants must submit a new can of regular tennis balls with the registration forms.

Pumpkin carving activity: The activity for ages 8-12 is scheduled from 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the multipurpose room of Kekuaokalani Gym. Registration is from Nov. 5-12.

County winter hoops tournament

The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League, in collaboration with the Department of Parks & Recreation, will hold its 34th annual “Winter Basketball Classic” tournament Dec. 26-29, at various sites in Hilo.

Entries are being accepted for age groups: 5-6, 7-8, boys 9-10, girls 10-under, boys 11-12, girls 12-under, boys 13-14, and girls 14-under. The age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2014.

All championship games will be played Dec. 29 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Registration for age group 8 and younger is $60 per team, for 9 and older is $80 per team, and for neighbor island teams, $25 per team. Deadline for team entry is Nov. 28.

Registration forms can be picked up at all police stations or on the County of Hawaii’s Department of Parks and Recreation web site.

Echo City going for roller derby title

Kona-based Echo City Knockouts will participate in the “Battle of the Islands” in Hilo on Nov. 15.

The state tournament, which includes teams from Kauai and Maui, starts at 9 a.m. in Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Parker hosts golf benefit

Parker School will hold its 12th annual Fairways & Friends Golf Tournament at Hualalai Resort on Saturday.

Proceeds go directly to the school’s financial aid.

Check-in for golf begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

In addition to golf, Hualalai Spa treatments will be offered that day. The services will be available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the services will go toward the school’s financial aid.

After the tournament, there will be an awards reception with pupu, cocktails and prizes.

The golf fee is $250 and includes the cost of the reception. For nongolfers, the reception fee is $50.

Library benefit walk/run in Waikoloa

The Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region will hold its fifth annual 5K Walk/Run for Literacy on Saturday.

The event starts and finishes near the playground of the Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School complex.

Entry fee, which includes a T-shirt, is $20 for adults, $10 for 13 and younger; keiki in strollers are free. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; start time is 7:30.

Karate tournament comes to Kona

The Kona branch of the International Karate League will host its 10th annual IKL Karate Championship from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

IKL branches from the Big Island, Oahu and California will attend. Other karate schools throughout Hawaii Island are invited.

The tournament will feature competition in kata (forms), kumite (sparring) and kobudo (weaponry).

The tournament is open to the public, with free admission.

Mauna Kea presents charity golf tourney

Mauna Kea Resort is holding the inaugural Big Island Bites Golf Tournament on Saturday.

The four-person scramble shotgun start is at noon. Food and specialty drinks courtesy of various restaurants are available on the course. There will be a dinner and awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

The cost of $300 per golfer, plus tax, includes green fees, dinner and prizes. Admission to the reception for guests of golfers is $75 plus tax.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Culinary Federation Kona Kohala Chefs Association’s campaign to help equip the kitchens at West Hawaii Community College at Palamanui.

Konawaena hosts golf benefit

Konawaena is holding its inaugural Wildcat Golf Challenge on Nov. 17 at Hokulia.

The $250 fee per golfer includes cart, continental breakfast and lunch.

Proceeds support the school’s athletic programs.

Paddle race during Thanksgiving holiday

The Beanie Heen Thanksgiving paddle race will be held Nov. 29 from Anaehoomalu Bay to Kawaihae Surf Park.

Relays are welcome, with the exchange at Puako, for the race of about 12 miles. There will be SUP, OC-1, OC-2 and relay divisions.

There will be a postrace party with awards and raffle.

Dec. 6: The 40K Teams for the Holidays race on Saddle Road starts at the 34.5 mile marker, goes south, makes a U-turn at the 22 maker and returns to the 34.5 marker.
