St. Joseph tournament

Crosstown rivals Hilo and Waiakea posted easy victories Friday night to advance to the championship game of the St. Joseph’s basketball tournament.

Jalen Carvalho scored 23 points in about a half’s worth of work to lead the Vikings to a 59-23 victory against Kau in the semifinals at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo. In an earlier game, Kahinu Alapai tallied 17 points as the Warriors beat Honokaa 73-43 to set up today’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.

Austin Dante chipped in with 10 points for Hilo and Jordan Caoagdan had nine. Larry-Dan Al-Navarro and Franklin each Orcino contributed five points for the Trojans, who play the Dragons in the 6 p.m. third-place game today.

Lucas St. George (14 points) and Calvin Mattos (11) also reached double figures for the Warriors. The Dragons were led by Cjay Carvalho (16) and Shyrome Batin (10).

Ben Uhlmann scored 17 points and Kaena Nahoopii had 11 to lead the host Cardinals, who will face Pahoa at 4:30 p.m. today for fifth place. Marc Grande led the Waveriders with 11 points and Jonah Kaulia added nine.

Tolby Saito had 16 points and Spencer Stroschein nine to lead the Daggers. Mikala Jordan led the Cowboys with 16 points. Justin Agbayani and Shaun-Ray Ramos each added eight. Kohala and Kealakehe play at 3 p.m. today for seventh place.

Miranda Nild netted a hat trick as Castro Valley beat the Hawaii Preparatory girls 3-0 at the Tri-Valley Classic in Danville, Calif., dropping Ka Makani to 1-1 at the preseason tournament.
