BIIF baseball: Kainalu Solomon carries Kohala past Keaau
Kainalu Solomon had two hits, a run batted in, and pitched a scoreless inning to help Kohala edge Keaau 4-3 on Monday.
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball game was played at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau.
The host Cowboys (1-0) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Solomon hurled in the fifth inning, striking out one and giving up a hit. He recorded the win, in relief of starter Ricky Ching, who pitched four innings. Ching gave up five hits and three runs.
Cougars starter Keian Kanetani went the distance and took the loss. He allowed six hits and four runs, with four strikeouts and a walk.
Solomon was the only Kohala batter to pair hits. Also driving in a run for the Cowboys were Tate Fernandez and Steven Medeiros.
Rason Martines and Justin Quesada each had two hits for Keaau (0-1). Quesada and Richard Hatori-Kanakaole each had an RBI for the visitors.

Chay Toson and Jordan Hirae combined on a five-hit shutout to lead Kamehameha (1-0) to the win over Honokaa (0-1) at Wong Stadium.
Toson started and went three innings. He got the win, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Hirae came on to pitch the final four innings. He gave up one hit while striking out seven and not walking a batter.
Caden Perreira started for the Dragons and took the loss. He allowed five hits and three runs. Ikena Juan hurled the final three innings.
Daylen Calicdan had two hits and an RBI to lead the Warriors. Austin Jardine had two hits to lead Honokaa.
