Lavaman Waikoloa has attracted athletes from around the globe to the Kohala Coast for nearly two decades, but what has race director Gerry Rott most excited for the 19th running of the event this Sunday is the abundance of local, talented youth athletes registered to take on the course.
WAIKOLOA — As the sun started its decent on the horizon, the grounds around the Queens’ Marketplace were bustling with action as more than 200 participants gathered for the Lavaman Sunset 5K run on Friday.
Oahu’s Tim Marr held off Kailua-Kona’s Luis De La Torre and Thomas Vonach down the final stretch to capture his third Lavaman Waikoloa title in nine years and first since 2007.
Tim Marr had close the past two years in his attempt to bring home a third title at Lavaman Waikoloa. Sunday, the Oahu native finally broke through, outpacing Kailua-Kona’s Luis De La Torre and Thomas Vonach for the title.
Team in Training, a group that raises money toward cures for blood cancers such as leukemia, have had a terrific partnership with Lavaman in its 13 years at the event.

The atmosphere was electric as hundreds of youth waded into the water and scurried on the beach for the 13th annual LavaKids Aquathlon as part of Lavaman Waikoloa weekend Saturday morning at Anaehoomalu Bay.
