University of Hawaii at Hilo coach Tino Reyes knows that good volleyball teams play consistently good. And that’s the habit the Vulcan coach hopes his young team picks up sooner than later.
On Saturday afternoon, the unbeaten Vulcans (4-0) dropped the first set on their way to a 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 win over East Central University (Okla.) at the UH-Hilo Gym.
“We played good at times, and bad at times,” Reyes said. “We’re looking for more consistency in our play.
“Our girls have a lot of club, high school and junior college experience, but they don’t have much experience playing together. The more they play together, the more consistent we should become.”
Junior Callie Aberle led UH-Hilo with 15 kills and freshman Kyndra Trevino-Scott had 10. Season kill-leader Marley Strand-Nicolaisen had a tough match, with eight kills in 33 attempts and nine errors, a -.030 hitting percentage.
Setter Sienna Davis had a match-high 31 assists to go along with 11 digs and five block assists. Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans with 13 digs.
Sara Simpson led the Tigers (0-2) with 12 kills and Sarah Nelson had 10. Setter Jessica Wilkinson had 24 assists and teammate Madison Seiler 14 to fuel the ECU offense.
The Vulcans next host Fort Hays State University on Monday at the UH-Hilo Gym. The match starts at 7 p.m.
