A strong group of returning players made Hawaii Prep’s girls soccer team a state title contender in and of itself.
When locked in a tight battle with Makua Lani at Old Kona Airport Park Wednesday, Ka Makani displayed an infusion of talent that made the team even stronger.
Freshman Marlie Mandaguit broke a 2-2 with a goal in the 69th minute, and junior Nanea Tavares added an insurance goal in the 77th as HPA improved to 2-0 with a 4-2 victory.
Senior forward Tiffany Nakamura had tied the match in the 68th minute for the Lions (1-2) with her fourth goal of the season, converting a penalty kick after an HPA player dragged down senior Lauren Mabuni in the penalty box.
In the 43rd minute, Mabuni scored her team-high fifth goal, halving what was a 2-0 Ka Makani advantage.
Senior midfielder Emily Evans opened the scoring for HPA in the fourth minute, and sophomore Bri Vallente found the back of the net in the 27th.
c Konawaena 10, Kohala 0: Kaulana Ruedy collected two goals, giving her six for the season, while Ua Ruedy and Jashea Leleiwi also scored twice in Kealakekua as the Wildcats improved to 2-1.
Nikki Kunitomo, Melissa Gouveia, Saxon Nagata and Chloe Delaney each scored once while Kili Kunitomo and Taiana Tolson combined to shut out the Cowgirls (0-3) in net.
c Honokaa 3, Parker 1: Senior Clayton Robinson gave the Dragons a comfortable 2-0 lead in Waimea by scoring his second and third goals of the season in the first 20 minutes.
Junior Jevin Dement bagged his first goal of the season for Honokaa (2-0), while senior Paul Gregg scored his second goal in as many games for the Bulls (0-2).
c Hawaii Prep 2, Makua Lani 0: Kepa Police scored his third goal of the season in the first half at Old Kona Airport Park as Ka Makani improved to 2-0.
Teak Owen added an insurance goal in the second half, and Trent Wise blanked the Lions (2-1) in goal.
On Saturday, Police had two goals and an assist in HPA’s 4-0 win over Kamehameha. Jevin Ching and Keisuke Ohtaka also scored, Connor Peterson had an assist and Wise recorded the shutout in goal.
c Konawaena 8, Kohala 1: J.G. Replogle scored five goals in Kealakekua as the Wildcats rolled in their season opener.
Angel Valdovinos, Gerardo Meneses and Jerry Sullivan each had one goal.
The home team of Konawaena could not identify the goal-scorer for Kohala (0-3).
