Brostek, HPA cruise past ’Riders


Sophomore forward Ula Brostek scored a game-high 19 points, leading host Hawaii Prep to a 52-14 win over Kealakehe Wednesday in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game.

Junior forward Tiana Reynolds added 13 points, and Tiana Bertelmann-Tabac followed with 10 as Ka Makani improved to 3-2.

Kehau Lee paced Kealakehe (0-5) with four points.

Honokaa 74, Kohala 33: Freshman point guard Kizzah Maltezo scored 14 points, and the host Dragons (4-1) hit nine 3-pointers at Honokaa Armory.

Senior guard Keana Kaohimaunu and sophomore guard Shayla Ignacio followed with 11 points apiece, while junior forward Hunter Liftee and junior guard Shemika Frazier each had 10. Ignacio hit three of the Dragons’ nine treys, while Maltezo and senior Yvonne Daniels each had two.

Senior guard Sheana Cazimero scored a game-high 17 points for the Cowgirls (1-3).

In the junior varsity game, Honokaa defeated Kohala 66-49 behind 22 points from Markell Marquez and 10 apiece from Kayla Requelman and Hii Hanohano. Jenny Fong scored a team-high 21 points for the Cowgirls, while Briana Harrison had 19.

Kamehameha-Hawaii 59, Ka’u 36 : Casey Poe scored 23 points, Riana Arima added 19, and Makamae Gabriel had nine for the Warriors (5-1).

Shaylin Navarro scored 12 points, Toni Beck added eight, and Denisha Navarro had seven for the Trojans (1-5), who trailed 38-14 at halftime at Koaia Gym.

Hilo 43, Waiakea 25: The Vikings hammered the Warriors with defense, winning a low-scoring affair at Waiakea.

Aliyah Pana scored 11 points to lead the unbeaten Vikings (6-0).

Shaila Apele and Sefulu Faavae had six points each to lead the Warriors (3-3).

In the JV game, Hilo beat Waiakea 49-15. Katie Loeak scored 15 points, and Rain Hall added 14 for the Vikings. Erin Morikawa and Evangelin Pascual had four each for the Warriors.

Pahoa 43, Keaau 25: Randi-Lee Berinobis scored a game-high 18 points, and Erleen Oguma added nine as the visiting Daggers (1-5) earned their first victory of the season.

Taylor Pocock and Jasmine Segobia scored seven and six points, respectively, for the Cougars (2-4).

Pahoa beat Keaau 39-35 in the JV game behind Makela Rincon’s 17 points and Golden Rowan’s 10 points. Aina Pdasdao led the Cougars with 19 points, and Tiffani Napihaa had nine.

BOYS

Konawaena 68, Laupahoehoe 23: Kenan Gaspar scored 16 points at Onizuka Gymnasium for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-0.

Brandon Awa, Brenton Shropshire and Jonah Bredeson added 10 points apiece for Konawaena.

Collin Lodivero led the Seasiders (0-5) with eight points, while Kysen Datuin had six.
