Concepcion Mendoza Carnate, 92, of Kapaau died Sept. 17, 2013, at her home. Born June 10, 1921, in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a homemaker and member of Sacred Hearts Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at her residence, 53-3886 Kolonahe St., Uma Place in Kapaau for an all-night vigil with a 5 p.m. wake service. Viola Chaffin

Viola Kanakaole Chung-Hoon Chaffin, 89, of Pahala died July 16, 2013, at her son’s residence. Born June 23, 1924, in Honolulu, she was a senior companion for the county government, a Hospice volunteer, a civilian worker for the Army Air Corps and member of Pahala Seniors Club, Ka‘u Hawaiian Civic Club and Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Hawaii.

John Juan Jason Hanog, 80, of Pepeekeo died Sept. 20, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 9, 1932, in Hakalau, he was a retired mechanic for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou, Filipino Catholic Club, Pepeekeo Filipino Club, Hui Okinawa, Okinawa Culture Club, Hawaii Portuguese Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Kulaimano Seniors, Sportsmen Inn Bowling Club of Hakalau and Safeway Bowling Club.

Mae Setsuko Kawahara, 77, of Hilo died Sept. 18, 2013, at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born May 13, 1936, in Kainaliu, she was a retired kindergarten teacher at Haaheo Elementary School in Hilo and member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Lehua Senior Bowling League, Hilo Seniors Bowling League and Thursday Seniors League.

William “Bud” Sherwood Loeffler Jr., 82, of Hilo died Aug. 14, 2013, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired police officer, former liquor inspector and Korean War Army veteran.

Nelson Kealoha “Moku” Mokuhalii, 71, of Ka‘u died Sept. 27, 2013, at his home. Born in Ka‘u, he was retired from Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3, as a heavy equipment operator for Sonomura.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at Waiohinu Park.

Glen Fusao Matsumoto, 54, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 6, 2013, at Kaiser Medical Center. Born Feb. 13, 1959, in North Kohala, he was the owner and general contractor of Matsumoto Contracting and a member of Waiaha Kumiai.

Fumio Matsuoka, 94, of Keei died Sept. 25, 2013, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Jan. 2, 1919, in Kealakekua, he was an electrician and member of Middle Keei Kumi, Kona Hongwanji, IBEW Local Union 1186 and Japanese Sumo Wrestling Club.

Mary Rae Lyons, 83, of Hilo died Sept. 21, 2013. She was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Antigo, Wis.

Setsuko “Sets” (Omonaka) Fukushima, 83, of Hilo died July 31, 2013. She was a retired accountant, office manager and proprietress of Stop-n-Shop Superette in Kaumana and volunteer coordinator of the AARP TaxAide program.

She is survived by, son, Ken Fukushima; daughter, Tinamarie (Hotchkiss Toyozaki) Fukushima; two grandchildren; brothers, Akira, Thomas, Rupert and Stanley; sister, Kikuyo Sueyoshi; numerous nieces and nephews.

Sheila Irene Falls, 80, of Waikoloa died Sept. 16, 2013, at her home. Born June 20, 1933, in South Bend, Ind., she was a former hairstylist and cosmetologist, insurance agent and office manager for Bognar Insurance Agency in South Bend, Ind., and member of Waikoloa Community Church and former volunteer and member of Epworth United Methodist Church in South Bend, Ind.

Lourdes Pitoy Antone Brown, 88, formerly of Nikiski, Alaska, died Sept. 6, 2013, in Hilo. Born April 10, 1925, in Hilo, she retired as an executive chef and manager of Sheffield Hotel Steak & Seafood Restaurant in Kenai, Alaska.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Oct. 12 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a service. A fellowship luncheon follows. Family requests purple color casual attire be worn. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory are urged to plant a tree.
