Smoke prompted plane evacuation, DOT says

Smoke in the cabin of a U.S. Airways flight Saturday night caused the flight crew to evacuate the plane, a Department of Transportation spokeswoman confirmed Thursday.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m., Caroline Sluyter said. The crew deployed the aircraft’s emergency chutes and passengers exited via the chutes. No one was injured, Sluyter said. She said she did not believe there was a fire, just smoke.
