Man killed in crash near Kiholo Bay

One man is dead and another injured following a three-car crash Thursday afternoon on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Kiholo Bay.

Hawaii Fire Department Acting Battalion Chief Charles Spain said the man was driving a small pickup truck and heading northbound around 4:30 p.m. when he was struck head-on by a southbound full-size pickup truck. The crash occurred between mile markers 82 and 83 on Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Apparently, the full-size pickup had sustained a blown front driver’s side tire causing the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic, he said. The truck also clipped a sedan before colliding head-on with the pickup.

No other occupants were in the small pickup, he said.

The male driver of the full-size truck was transported to Kona Community Hospital in stable condition, according to medics. No other injuries were reported.

Queen Kaahumanu Highway was closed for several hours while police and fire personnel remained on the scene and reopened at about 8 p.m.
