Brush fire reported Friday morning in Ka‘u

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a Friday morning brush fire that consumed about 60 acres near Lower Mualoa Road in Ka‘u.

Responding to a 10:32 a.m. report, firefighters found the blaze burning in a ravine between two macadamia nut orchards off Highway 11, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

Winds were gusting from the northeast at 25 mph, fanning the fire toward the highway, which was closed for a period while crews fought the fire. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from crossing the highway.

Firefighters remained on scene throughout the night, dousing any flames and monitoring an established perimeter, according to the department. No injuries were reported.
