Japanese-born contemporary artist Susumu Sakaguchi will open his first exhibition in Hawaii since 2008 on Monday at Volcano Art Center.
Sakaguchi’s exhibit carries three distinct and equally poignant titles: “Earth is Born,” “Time of Crisis” and “Peace and Center of Universe.”
“The last thing we think about is our Earth,” Sakaguchi said. “We are conscious and sensitive to those things which change before our eyes; our sensations are boundless yet our perceptions are finite. My paintings are neither social, nor political. They are the natural response of one person expressing in form and body of sensibility, his biological destination.”
Since 1972, Sakaguchi’s paintings have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Japan. Sakaguchi now calls Volcano home with his wife, Shizuno Nasu, a classically trained professional dancer whose performances often accompany her husband’s exhibitions.
A gallery reception and preview is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hale Hoomana, Volcano Art Center’s multipurpose facility at its Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. The show will remain open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through July 28 and on weekends, by appointment.
