Buddhist women’s association awards scholarships
The Hawaii Island United Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association recently awarded a $750 scholarship to Alyssa Fujii of Kamuela Hongwanji.
Fujii, a recent graduate of Honokaa High School, is the daughter of Allie Fujii and Alice Fujii of Waimea. She will enroll at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and pursue a career in forestry. Fujii has participated in Dharma School for the last 15 years. She has emceed at church services regularly, served as an assistant teacher for four years, completed Dharma studies and attended YESS Conferences.
Fujii excelled academically at Honokaa and held leadership positions in student government and other school-related groups. She was an active member of several clubs, including the Future Farmers of America. Fujii is actively involved in her community as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the community Thanksgiving dinner.
Kathy Oyadomari of Puna Hongwanji, a Hilo High School graduate, also received a $750 scholarship from the association.
Hawaii Prep students go back to school
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s new faculty and staff members for the 2012-13 school year were among the hundreds of Hawaii Prep ohana members who gathered at Taylor Commons Aug. 19 for Experience HPA, the school’s annual welcome back-to-school celebration, hosted by the HPA Ohana Association.
HPA students in grades K-8 returned to school Aug. 21. Upper School classes began Aug. 22.
Sambrano awarded Furukawa Study Abroad Scholarship
Mitchell Sambrano, a University of Hawaii at Hilo senior majoring in Japanese studies, has been awarded the $1,200 Audrey S. Furukawa Study Abroad Scholarship.
Sambrano, a Honokaa High School graduate, is the fourth recipient of the award. He has maintained a 3.75 grade point average and is presently completing his Teaching English as a Second Language certificate. The scholarship will enable Sambrano to study at Tokyo Gakugei University for the academic year that begins in October.
In addition to being a dedicated student, Sambrano serves as a backstage assistant with the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center, is a student orientation leader, a member of the Filipino Club, and practices martial arts.
