Haircuts to benefit emergency shelter

The Vanity Box, a full-service beauty salon on Pawai Place in Kailua-Kona, is hosting a Back to School fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

There will be $5 haircuts for children, with all of the profits going toward a local emergency shelter for women and children. The salon is also accepting gently used clothing, which will be donated to the shelter.

Honokaa schools hold parent orientations Monday, Wednesday

Honokaa High and Intermediate School will hold two ninth grade parent orientation nights this week.

The first orientation will be held Monday at the school’s auditorium in Honokaa.

The second is slated for Wednesday at the Thelma Parker Library in Waimea.

Each orientation commences at 5 p.m. and is expected to last about an hour.

Parents will be provided with information on school goals, college and career readiness, bus policies, free and reduced lunch applications and other programs at the school. They will also have a chance to talk story with a student panel as well as meet the school’s administration and several of its staff.

Seniors meet Wednesday

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.

On tap for the meet is celebrating June, July and August birthdays. Games are also planned for later in the day.

U.S. Coast Guard to hold safety class

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold an “About Boater Safety” class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11 in Kailua-Kona.

The class will be held at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office at the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor.

The class is limited to 10 students. The cost is $50, which includes lunch and a book.
