Blind, low vision support group meets Thursday

The West Hawaii Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind and low vision support group will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. There will be a presentation by the Hawaii County Office of Aging.

VFW Post 12122 meets Saturday

The Lance Corporal Christopher Camero VFW Post 12122 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at its facility on Makala Boulevard. During the meeting, Veterans Day will be discussed. Plans for Thanksgiving at the Post will be formulated.

Kalani wins Purple Ribbon Award

Jackie Kalani, who helped established the state’s first battered women’s shelter in Hilo in 1978, was named the 2013 Purple Ribbon Award winner by the Family Violence Interagency Committee. The committee selects a community member who provides leadership in the effort to enddomestic violence for the annual award.

Gandall graduates basic combat training

Army National Guard Pvt. Kinney K. Gandall recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He completed nine weeks of training, studying the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness. He also received instruction in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

He is the son of Alicia Salboro of Hilo, and a 2011 Hilo High School graduate.

He is the son of Sammuel and Adrienne Thomas of Hilo and a 2007 Kamehameha Schools, Hawaii, graduate.
