Big Island police are searching for a 31-year-old man who reportedly escaped late Tuesday from a low-security jail in Hilo.
Ryan Jeffries-Hamar who is on extended furlough and does not reside at Hale Nani Correctional Facility but is required to check-in monthly, reportedly left the facility on foot without completing the check-in process, said Toni Schwartz, state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman. His criminal history includes burglary, theft and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, she said, noting it is unlikely he is armed or dangerous.
Jeffries-Hamar is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
