Police officer shoots N. Kona man

A police officer shot a West Hawaii man Monday evening in Kona Heavens.

Police responded to a report of an attempted suicide at a Manu Mele Street home in Kailua-Kona, just after 9 p.m.

Police found a 33-year-old man outside the home holding a rifle. Officers ordered the man to put the gun down, but he refused and, according to police, tried to harm himself with the gun.

One officer shot the man in the shoulder, causing the victim to drop the rifle. The victim is listed in stable condition at Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated, police said.

The officer is identified as a 31-year-old eight-year Police Department veteran.

No officers were injured during the incident.

As is standard practice in any police involved shooting, the Police Department’s Area II Criminal Investigations Section will conduct a criminal investigation into the shooting and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative investigation
