High wind warning issued for Big Isle summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the Big Island summits until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The service forecast westerly winds of 30 mph to 45 mph with localized gusts topping 60 mph for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above the 8,000-foot elevation.

A high wind warning means winds of at least 40 mph, or gusts of at least 60 mph, are forecast. Residents are urged to secure and protect property. Travel to the summit areas should be delayed until the winds subside. Winds this strong can make driving very dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles.
