Firefighters resume efforts to quash 15-acre Naalehu brush fire

Firefighters today resumed efforts to extinguish a brush fire that consumed about 15 acres east of Naalehu.

The fire was declared contained early this morning after igniting about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in a pasture located on the makai side of Highway 11, near mile marker 63, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters will be working throughout the day dousing flare-ups and hot spots, according to the department. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area because crews remain on the scene.

Highway 11 was closed in the area for several hours before opening to one lane of travel. The highway reopened about 4 a.m., according to police.
