Child survives head-on collision that kills 4

A young child is the only survivor of a head-on collision this morning on the Kona side of Pahala, according to Ka‘u Police Capt. Andrew Burian.

The motor vehicle accident claimed the lives for four people — the two occupants of a full-size Ford pickup truck, which caught fire, and two occupants in a white, four-door sedan, officials said. The child was a passenger in the white sedan.

The child has been transported to the hospital. No further information on the child’s condition is available at this time.

Highway 11 is closed between Pahala and Punaluu Park, and will continue to be closed for at least two more hours. Officials are urging motorist to use alternate routes.

The crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. today.
